Mission Starts Here
I lead a Missional Community (20-50 people) (and coach others who are launching Missional Communities), and as part of that culture I disciple a number of people in a setting/vehicle that we call "Huddle" (6-8 people). Of course, discipleship really happens with access to your life, so the reality is that no matter what we do 'organizationally,' the rhythms that are in the life of a disciple has to start with us.
So, when we live as family on mission: mission starts here. Our home. Our life. It's about our family being on mission, not about waiting to grow to a certain number in order to start, or waiting for the next outreach event. It's not about adding something new to our lives as far as an event or new activity, rather it's about rethinking how we live our lives: forming new habits and attitudes. The word we see in the Bible for household is "oikos," consisting of blood and non-blood relationships. We specifically want to build into our lives an oikos on mission (extended family on mission), and in order to do that, it is not about events as one time things but predictable patterns. The rhythms need to start in our daily life.
With the conversation of access into our lives comes discussion of hospitality and boundaries.
Here is a really insightful series on the topic, by Jo Saxton with 3DM:
